“The Pelagian” Freehand Tobacco Pipe” $95.00 +S&H

Pipe #48 Briar Plateaux Freehand Pelagian 3-2018

Freehand pipes are designed around the natural direction of the briar’s grain, which is why I call this freehand pipe “The Pelagian.” Named for a Christian heresy that posits the essential goodness of human nature and the ability of each individual to freely choose what is good without divine aid, this pipe has lots of individual character. The white stem suggests the innate goodness of the pipe, while the natural top hints at the inevitable dark side of free choice. The flared stummel echoes the flare on the stem without replicating it exactly. The extra-wide tobacco chamber allows you to freely choose whether to smoke a little or a lot of tobacco at a time.

Pipe #48 Briar Plateaux Freehand Pelagian 3-2018

This pipe is hand-shaped from genuine Mediterranean briar burl, fitted with an acrylic stem, and finished with a hand-rubbed coat of oil followed by wax. The pipe is expertly engineered to deliver a satisfying smoke. The pipe comes in a velour bag with a few pipe cleaners–just to get you started.

Weight: 1.34 .oz. (38 g)
Length: 6 in.
Bowl Height: 1 3/4 in.
Tobacco Chamber: 7/8 in. wide and 1 3/8 in. deep
Matte finish, made in USA from genuine Mediterranean briar burl.

Cherry and Pecan Marking Gauge $40.00 +S&H SOLD

Marking Gauge #2 1-2018

This marking gauge is made from black cherry, and the fence is faced with spalted pecan.  The bell-shaped profile of the fence gives you a convenient place to rest your index finger and thumb.  The profile also offers a wider bearing surface than most other gauges without making the fence too big to wrap your hand around.

Marking Gauge #2 1-2018

On the side and back of the fence, I filled in a small void by inlaying some crushed malachite, a naturally green stone.

The arm locks securely with a sliding dowel mechanism, which is operated with one hand.  Press the button on one side firmly and the arm locks; press the other one and it unlocks.  There is no side-to-side play in the arm.  At first, the arm will require some pressure to slide in and out, but this will become easier with repeated use.

Marking Gauge #2 1-2018

The pin is made from hardened steel and sharpened to a rounded spear-point, so it cuts in either direction.  While a pin-style gauge works best with the grain, this gauge will also mark across the grain if used with light pressure.  As you resharpen the pin, you can tap it down from the top.

Overall dimensions: the arm is #” long and about 5/8″ square.  The fence is #” wide, #” tall, and 1 1/4″ thick.  Finish is only paste-wax rubbed out to a light sheen.

“Perseverance of the Saints” Churchwarden Tobacco Pipe **SOLD**

Pipe #40 Briar Churchwarden Giant's Chimney 2-2016

Inspired by the doctrine of the Perseverance of the Saints, this long-stem tobacco pipe features an extra-deep chamber for a very long smoke. It’s perfect for those long, theological conversations with friends. The rough surface on the top of the bowl and the end of the stummel is the natural surface of the briar burl from which the wood was cut. The long stem delivers a cool smoke.

“Total Depravity” Churchwarden Tobacco Pipe **SOLD**

Pipe #44 Briar Plateaux Churchwarden Battle Axe 2018

Inspired by the Calvinist doctrine of total depravity, this long-stem tobacco pipe is perfect for theological reflection, either alone or with friends. With an extra-deep bowl, you can indulge in a truly depraved amount of tobacco, while the thick walls of the pipe’s bowl insure you against burn-out. The knobby texture on the top of the bowl and the end of the stummel is the natural surface of the burl from which the briar wood is cut.
